Shanghai, a municipality directly under the Central Government, is an economic powerhouse located in the Yangtze River Delta, ranking first in China in terms of total GDP for many years. Infrastructure-wise, Shanghai boasts the world’s largest seaport and Asia’s largest airport. Shanghai Port has established container cargo trade with north of 500 peers in 214 countries and regions. In 2018, Shanghai Port ranked second in the world in terms of cargo throughput. Shanghai operates two large international airports: Hongqiao and Pudong.
Local competitive industries, including new energy, high-end equipment manufacturing, new materials and other strategic emerging industries, have recorded double-digit growth in total output value for a number of years. The city’s online retail sales have grown rapidly, outpacing the growth of total retail sales of consumer goods for several years in a row. The strategic new industries and e-commerce industry have grown to become major economic enablers and have opened up new grounds for the development of the warehousing and logistics industry.
