Hangzhou, China, is the capital of Zhejiang province. The Hangzhou metropolitan area has a population of about 6.2 million, making it the 14th-largest urban area in China. The economic engine of Zhejiang province, Hangzhou is home to companies involved in equipment manufacturing and is center of production for silk and women’s garments.

Hangzhou occupies an important role in domestic and international trade because of engineering ingenuity that resulted in a unique transportation infrastructure. Hangzhou sits at the southern end of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, the world’s largest man-made waterway. Hangzhou’s most outstanding piece of transportation infrastructure is the 22-mile-long Hangzhou Bay Bridge, the world’s longest transoceanic bridge. Upon completion, the Hangzhou Bay Bridge reduced the distance from Hangzhou to the key population and trade center of Shanghai by about 70 miles.
