The core area of South China is the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), which includes Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan, Huizhou and other major cities in the mainland. The region accounts for about 9% of China’s GDP (excluding Hong Kong and Macao).

According to the development plan of the GBA, the region will focus on connecting the Mainland with Hong Kong and Macao as well as the east and west sides of the Pearl River Estuary to build an intercity rapid transportation network with high-speed railroads, intercity railroads and high-grade highways to achieve one-hour access between major cities in the GBA.

Guangzhou Port is the largest comprehensive pivotal port and container trunk port in South China, ranking tenth in the world in terms of cargo throughput. In addition, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is one of the most important international aviation hubs serving the “Belt & Road Initiative” (BRI) and the “Silk Road in the Air”.

With a relatively well-developed manufacturing industry, the region is shifting from an industrial economy to a service economy. Some cities such as Hong Kong and Shenzhen have blossomed into innovation-driven economies underpinned by knowledge and talents that focus on the development of new technologies and products with independent intellectual property rights.
